4 Red Flags To Look For In Denver Moving Companies

So you've thought it over, talked with your family, and decided to move to a new home. Congratulations! Few things are more exciting (and stressful) than moving into a new place. But you'll need reliable support for your move, and a quick Google search will reveal that there are plenty of Denver moving companies to choose from. How can you determine which one is the right option for your move? And how can you protect yourself from a moving scam? That's where we can help you out.

Our experienced movers have been in the industry for decades. Over that time, we've developed a detailed understanding of virtually every facet of the industry. We're here to use that experience today to help you identify common red flags when looking for a Denver moving company.

How To Tell When Denver Moving Companies Aren't Reliable

Millions upon millions of moves take place in the U.S. every year. And as it turns out, moving scams are more common than you might think. In fact, a recent study from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) that aimed to expose fraudulent moving practices revealed that the organization receives an average of 13,000 complaints about movers every year.

Clearly moving scams can happen to anyone. It's up to you as the consumer to keep your eyes peeled for red flags as you research moving companies. Let's dive into some of these top red flags.

1. Lack Proper Licenses

You wouldn't hire a contractor to fix your home if they weren't licensed, right? So why would you ever hire movers that lack the proper licenses?

You should take the time to make sure that your movers are licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier and Safety Administration (FMCSA). This federal entity helps protect consumers from falling victim to fraudulent moving companies. If a company isn't properly licensed through the FMCSA, there's a very good chance it's a fraudulent company.

You can check that a company is licensed with the FMCSA by using their USDOT number. Reputable moving companies will list that number at the bottom of their websites. Just take that USDOT number and search for it in the FMCSA database. Within minutes, you'll know whether they have the right license or not.

If you're moving in-state, you also need to verify that your movers are licensed to work within Colorado. Reputable movers in Colorado must have the right permits and registration within the state. You can check those things for each company through the Transportation Safety and Compliance Unit of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

2. Questionable Estimates

If a moving estimate feels too good to be true, then it probably is. Some movers may try to lure you in with incredible quotes, but you should be cautious of estimates that are shockingly low.

You can get a better idea of an accurate moving estimate by requesting quotes from numerous Denver moving companies. In general, you can expect a majority of those estimates to be more-or-less consistent with one another. If one is surprisingly low, that's a red flag.

In addition, there are many other questionable quoting practices that you should look out for. These may include things like:

  • Movers that offer quotes over the phone.
  • Promises to beat the prices of other moving companies.
  • Refusing to put your estimate in writing.

When they arrive for your in-person estimate, you should pay attention to how professional those movers act. Did they show up late? Do they avoid answering your questions? Are there any other indicators that may seem unprofessional? If so, you should probably look for another moving company.

3. Shady Payment Practices

In most moves, you can expect to pay your movers upon delivery of your items. Unfortunately, you may find some moving companies out there that may not adhere to that business practice. They may instead rely on some shady payment practices, such as:

  • Asking for payment upfront - You should NEVER pay for your move before the work has begun. This would give you zero control over when you'll see your belongings again.
  • Large down payment requests - A deposit for your move may be expected for most movers, but it should never exceed 20% of the total payment. If they ask for a shockingly sizeable down payment, you should steer clear of that option.
  • Cash only - This is a BIG red flag! If they're asking for cash only, it's likely those movers don't want to leave a paper trail. Cash payments also make it more difficult to dispute the charges later down the line.

If you notice any of these payment practices, then you should look elsewhere for your movers.

4. An Inconsistent Company Name

There's arguably no bigger red flag than a moving company that has changed its name multiple times. An occasional rebrand or an updated logo can be fine, but when a company distinctly changes its name time and time again, you might want to look elsewhere.

Movers may change their company name to circumvent subpar consumer reviews and negative PR. It's a common tactic to get around scam busters, like the BBB. So, if you can trace the company's history through several name changes, it's likely they aren't the right choice for your move.
